Skateboarding
Skateboarding is an activity that has definitely entered the mainstream. Witness to this societal bit of evolutionary magic are the many “no skateboarding” signs that are cropping up on plazas and walkways across the United States. It is interesting to note that skateboards as somewhat mavericks when it comes to use; they are used by some simply as modes of transportation and to get from point A to point B without waiting for a bus or resorting to the use of a bike. Yet at the same time the skateboard can be used as a hobby tool and even a social tool, since skateboarders like to band together, hang out, talk, and of course engage in some skate boarding. For the die hard who has been practicing with her or his skate boards for a while, doing tricks and even competing in a wide range of skate board events has elevated the fact of being a humble recreational skateboarder into something of athleticism.
If one may believe the stereotype, the average skate boarders are male, young, somewhat rebellious, and musically inclined. There are of course the bad apples that turn simple Habitat skateboards into weapons and that will force pedestrians out of the way simply by barreling down on them. Those who have seen the change from the old school skateboards to the new ones, and who realize that skateboarding, much like surfing, is an activity that will have find much more acceptance if everyone plays to get along, are changing the image that skateboarding lacks appeal to all segments of the population.
Of course, there are other aspects that have moms look at skateboard games with suspicion: skateboarding falls, for instance, may cause severe injuries and even result in bones being broken and teeth being chipped or lost. Fortunately there are now many seasoned boarders who have begun to hold classes and train the next generation of skateboarding aficionados how to stay safe. Passing along skateboarding tips online and in person, they attract a large following. Some even have their own loyal fan clubs where members will have the revered skateboarder’s image saved as skateboard wallpaper onto their desktop. Granted, this kind of following is more typical of the competitive athletes who use the board to further their endeavors, but since the sport is so young and so many still have a chance at getting in on the ground floor in making a name for themselves, early cases of hero worship are not unheard of.
