Skateboard Equipment
Somewhere, sometime the notion sprang up that the only skateboarding gear necessary consisted of a bandana, a ripped pair of jeans, and maybe some tennis shoes. Sure, you will see many a skateboarder today wearing exactly that getup and doing their kick flips and various other tricks much to the amusement of girlfriends and onlookers, but have you ever wondered why these bright, young people are refusing to wear the kind of skateboard gear that would protect their heads from undue contact with the hard pavements? Quite possibly the same philosophy that prevents motorcyclists from donning helmets is also at work with those who eschew any skateboard supplies that would add even a modicum of safety to the every day life of a skateboarder.
While the young ‘uns you see out there may happily chip their teeth, get them knocked out altogether, and do not mind the knew scrapes that get so deep that you can see the white of the bone, it is not too late for the children in your home who are still under your tutelage. Teach them now that skateboard equipment is not un-cool, that safety must come first, and that no amount of female adoration is worth a flesh eating virus infection in a deeply scraped knew that will require frequent draining and leave horrible scaring behind. To this end, here are some suggestions about cheap skateboard supplies (wholesale skateboard supplies frequently come up for auction and are broken down in manageable lots) and skateboarding protective gear that will keep them safe while having fun:
- Do not mistake branded apparel with skateboard safety equipment. There are, however, pads that are manufactured to be worn underneath regular clothing. The manufacturer of skateboards & supplies who thought of this wanted to make sure that downhill skateboarding gear included safety pads for those who end up in wipe outs or even crashes. Skateboard equipment of this kind should be tried on by the wearer and may need to be special ordered.
- For the gentler sex, girls’ skateboarding gear should also include the addition of upper body padding for obvious reasons.
- Many a skateboard supply store will carry knee and elbow pads, and they, too, should be added to girl's skateboarding gear.
- A helmet is protective equipment for skateboarding by either gender. Do not skimp on this the most important safety equipment for skateboarding! Helmets must fit well, adjust easily, and should not be culled from another sport just because it’s sitting around the house. Remember that you only have one head and cannot fall back on another one if you crack this one open! Any skateboard equipment that will protect this most important asset needs to be custom made for just this endeavor.
So go ahead and take your kids to the skateboard equipment store to buy a skateboard, equipment, and protective gear! Then make them wear it!
